The Luminary Interview

We had the pleasure of talking with Alex and Jake of The Luminary to find out all about the band and what they do. This is what he had to say:

1) What's your name and role in the band?

     Alex: I’m the Vocalist.

Jake: I’m one of two guitarists in the band.

2) What made you want to be in such a heavy band, write heavy music?

Jake: Heavy music has been in my life ever since elementary school. Linkin Park, Alexisonfire and Billy Talent are a few of the bands that I used to really love when I was younger. I started going to local shows when I was in grade 9 and it inspired me a lot – seeing other people my age rocking out on stage made me want to start my own band!

3) The London scene has evolved in the recent years with not so many locals in the scene but more touring bands coming around. What is it like being a local band in the scene?

Alex: Being a local band in London is fun, because all of the bands you play with eventually become kind of like your second family. We hope to see the scene grow and can’t wait to make more friends as we play more shows. Let’s get London on the map!

4) The word Luminary means to influence or inspire others. What do you want to inspire people to do?

Alex: We would want to inspire people to follow their dreams and goals, even through tough times and adversity. We want people to create and explore their lives instead of sticking to what’s comfortable.

Jake: I’d love to be able to inspire other people to start their own band. Write some music and come play a show with us!

5) If you were to describe The Luminary to someone on the street, what would you tell them?

Alex: It’s like groovy metalcore with sprinkles of a lot of other influences ranging from jazz to hardcore punk.

    Jake: Loud. Sorry, Mom.

6 a) You guys just recently recorded your debut album, what was the process like? Did you get the sound you wanted?

Alex: We track demos for all songs we write, which can kind of take a while. It took us about a year to come up with a set of songs that we liked enough for an EP. After we got the demos 90% of the way there, we recorded them again properly so that they could be mixed and mastered. I was in Brazil when we were tracking, so most of the vocals for Collective Unconscious were recorded there. Once we had the bulk of the guitars and vocals properly tracked, we finished writing and producing the songs and sent it off to our friend, Kris (from The Healing - an amazing London band!), for mixing and mastering. I think we learned a lot about ourselves and flushed out our recording process when working on Collective Unconscious. Hopefully our next EP should be smoother to write and record.

6 b) Being a progressive, Djent band, you need to be very talented at guitar, how did your guitarists get so good and what methods do you feel others should look into so they can progress to that level?

Jake: Personally, I’ve found that learning how to play my favourite songs has helped me the most in developing new guitar techniques. Trying to figure out what other people have done and emulating their technique always forces me to re-evaluate my playing.

7) What is it about the 7 string sound and tone that you like over the traditional 6 string in regards to your band?

Jake: We tune down the lowest string on our guitars so that they’re in a “drop” tuning, giving us the ability to use a full power chord on the bottom 3 strings, while still allowing us access to a full 6 string guitar on top. I find that this provides us with a really interesting way to think about our guitar riffs. It also allows us to achieve a lower tuning than is normally possible with a traditional 6 string.

8) We noticed your band has no bassist, how come? how do you get around that? Does it hinder your sound at all?

Alex: We previously didn’t have a bassist and had to rely on a bass backing track when we played live. Our friend Josh has joined us on bass though, and we’re excited to release new music with him!

9)  In June and July, you just did your first little tours and even made it out to Montreal. How did the shows go? How was the crowd response in other cities?

Alex: Playing those shows was a great learning experience. Although the venues weren’t always super packed, we got a lot of feedback on our live sound, which is always great to hear. The crowds were usually pretty responsive and we had a great time at every show. We can’t wait to get back on the road next summer.

10) You guys recently did a music video, what song is it for? What is the concept and how did it all go?

Jake: We recently released a music video for our song “Awake”, which is the fifth track off of our EP. We decided to keep the video simple and just got some footage of us playing the song in a field. We had a lot of fun shooting the video, though. It was interesting to see all of the equipment that’s used and how the whole process works overall. Our friend Ian did a great job on it!

11) Which bands from around the local London scene would you suggest to someone looking for new music? Who do you miss?

Alex: There are so many good bands in London right now. Some of them include: Playing God, The Healing, Vice Ring, King Pin, Soul Sucker, Falsifier, Rise of Ares, and many more!

Jake: I miss Allatus Adeo and Tear Apart Midnight.
